Water Reclamation District Offers Free Rain Barrels to Rolling Meadows Residents
Rolling Meadows residents are eligible to receive up to four free rain barrels through a program offered by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD).
The 55-gallon rain barrels help homeowners conserve water and reduce storm water runoff by capturing rain water from a home’s roof and gutters. The stored water is then available when needed for watering lawns and gardens, washing cars, and other uses.
Barrels are available in four colors: black, blue, warm grey, and terra cotta.
Residents who would like to receive free rain barrels should contact Public Works at 847-963-0500. The City will place all orders on residents’ behalf at the end of each month requests are received. The MWRD will deliver rain barrels to residents free-of-charge.
Per our agreement with MWRD any rain barrels that are not installed or were subsequently disconnected from a residents home must be returned to the Public Works Department.
Residents may order up to 4 rain barrels. The City and the District may access the homeowner’s property to conduct an inspection of the installed rain barrels upon reasonable notice to the recipient of the rain barrel(s).
Rain barrels are being provided in an effort to reduce flooding risks, and for improved storm water management practices.

For those residents who placed an order for the free rain barrels in March, your order was placed April 5, 2016. MWRD informed us today (5/24/16) that rain barrel deliveries are taking 8-10 weeks and we can expect that time frame throughout the summer. That will include the April orders placed May 4, 2016 and the order we plan on placing the beginning of June.
